The #1 Mistake People Make on the Scales
Feb 20, 2025One of the most debated questions in weight loss is:
"How often should I step on the scale?"
I have a strong opinion on this—both from personal experience and from coaching people for the past 13 years.
Here’s the bottom line:
People who weigh themselves regularly see better results.
It’s that simple. The scale is a powerful accountability tool.
Now, I also have a strong opinion on how often you should weigh yourself—and my recommendation? Daily weighing. I've done it myself for the past 5 years and gained invaluable insights into my health.
The biggest mistake I see people make is stepping on the scale randomly and expecting meaningful insights.
That’s like playing Russian Roulette with your progress and your goals!
Weight naturally fluctuates from day to day—mostly due to fluctuations in fluid. So if you only weigh in occasionally, you risk seeing a number that’s misleading, which may cause you to feel incredibly peeved off and lead you down a spiral of despair (and we've all been there!)
Instead, weighing yourself daily helps you recognize patterns and understand how your body responds to:
➡️ Hormone fluctuations
➡️ Salty foods—especially at dinner
➡️ Poor sleep
➡️ Dehydration
➡️ Medications
➡️ Exercise-induced inflammation
But the other question that is worth asking is this:
"Do I HAVE to weigh myself?"
Of course not! It's not a compulsory requirement for weight loss. The only must is making nutrition changes.
I have clients who prefer not to know the numbers, and that’s totally fine! I simply track their progress in other ways.
At the end of the day, do what works for you. But if you choose to weigh-in, do it daily, collect real data, and use it to guide your journey—rather than letting a random weigh-in send you spiraling.
No more Russian Roulette with the scale!
